Will My PC Run Oblivion Remastered?
When The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion launched in 2006, it set a new standard for open-world RPGs with its vast world, deep lore, and groundbreaking AI systems. It was both a critical and commercial success, selling millions of copies and establishing a lasting legacy among fantasy game fans. Now, nearly two decades later, Oblivion Remastered is here—rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 with stunning visuals, enhanced systems, and a fresh take on a beloved classic. But with all these upgrades, one big question remains: will your PC be able to run it?

Will My PC Run Oblivion Remastered?

When The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion launched in 2006, it redefined open-world RPGs with its expansive world and rich storytelling. The game was a commercial success, selling over 3 million copies within its first year and earning numerous Game of the Year awards. Its modding community thrived, keeping the game alive for years beyond its release.

Now, nearly two decades later, Bethesda has unveiled Oblivion Remastered, a comprehensive overhaul built on Unreal Engine 5. This remaster doesn’t just upscale textures; it reconstructs the game with modern graphics, enhanced lighting, and refined gameplay mechanics, aiming to deliver a fresh yet familiar experience.

Official System Requirements

Given the advancements in technology and the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered demands more from your hardware than the original. Here’s what you need to know:

Minimum Requirements

OS: Windows 10 64-bit

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K

Memory: 16 GB RAM

Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti

DirectX: Version 12

Storage: 125 GB available space

By any measure, these requirements are pretty steep – remember these are the minimum requirements the developer deems necessary to play the game. Moving to recommended specs, things become even more demanding:

Recommended Requirements

OS: Windows 11 64-bit

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K

Memory: 32 GB RAM

Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA RTX 2080

DirectX: Version 12

Storage: 125 GB available space

Phew! Certainly not something that’ll run on the PC you used to play Oblivion the first time around!

Hardware Breakdown

Lets decode these requirements and use our knowledge of other Unreal Engine 5 powered titles that use the same technology to answer if your PC can run this highly unexpected but exciting release.

CPU (Processor)

Bethesda recommends the Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K as suitable for playing this game. We expect processors of this class to capably handle the game when running at full HD and 1440P resolutions. From these recommendations, we can also extrapolate that higher end i7s and Ryzen 7s from earlier generations will also be fine, as they will have similar per-core performance and a similar number of cores overall. When comparing more contemporary chips, any current Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 or Core Ultra 5 will be just fine. To push the detail up to max and enjoy the best Oblivion Remastered has to offer you will want to look at the hotrod AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D – the X3D cache has repeatedly been shown to deliver the best possible performance in Unreal Engine powered games.

GPU (Graphics Card)

Here Bethesda recommends two older, but surprisingly powerful GPUs: the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and NVIDIA RTX 2080. An RTX 2080 performs very similarly to an RTX 4060 Ti, which in turn isn’t far off the brand new RTX 5060 Ti. It is still is considerably faster than an RTX 4060, which just goes to show how demanding this game is. On the AMD side, the current RX 9060 XT is only a touch faster than the RX 6800XT. If you are looking for a new PC, you should be looking at an RTX 5060 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT – at least. Gamers looking to run at high refresh rates on 1440P monitors will see real milage from an RTX 5070 Ti based PC, or one of the incredibly well reviewed RX 9070 or 9070 XT based systems. Lastly, those looking for an Ultra-wide 2x1440P or 4K experience should be shopping for RTX 5080 or even 5090 based PCs for this demanding UE5 powered-title – the game leverages Unreal Engine 5’s advanced rendering features, such as Lumen for dynamic lighting, necessitating powerful GPUs for optimal performance.

Memory (RAM)

Adequate RAM ensures smooth multitasking and prevents performance bottlenecks during gameplay. Insufficient RAM usually manifests itself as ugly judders or very low minimum FPSs where the system is having to swap to your primary storage device to keep the GPU and CPU fed with data. 32GB should be ample for this game, whilst 16GB is largely “not enough” for most modern UE5 powered games and should be upgraded as soon as possible.

Storage

The substantial storage requirement of 125GB is due to the gorgeous high-resolution assets and expansive game content. An SSD is going to be essential for adequate load times and overall performance. Even the original Oblivion was a chore to play on a traditional HDD, and Remastered will only exacerbate this with its much more demanding open world environment where you have a whole realm of Tamriel to explore.

Final Thoughts

Oblivion Remastered brings a beloved classic into the modern era, offering enhanced visuals and gameplay improvements. Ensuring your PC meets the above requirements will provide a seamless and immersive experience as you return to the world of Tamriel.
